From Brackish to Fresh: A New Era of Water Security and Community Empowerment
Podor – The community members were overjoyed when they finally got to taste the sweet, refreshing water! For years, they had to make do with brackish water and contaminated river water. But now, they have access to clean, safe drinking water from a tap – made from the same brackish water that had been making people sick for so long.
The solar-powered water kiosk, financed through impact investing*, and established in close collaboration with a Senegalese company, is strategically located in a community of eight villages on the border of Senegal with Mauritania, adjacent to a major highway. It is now providing improved water security for the region through water desalination.
PLA’s water initiative is strategically integrated with the NAMA4PD (Narrative Management for Peace through Dialogue) concept – Water Kiosks transform into Social Information Hubs at key regional nodes.
These hubs serve as centers for Reliable Information Exchange, Community Engagement and Regional Connectivity. For more watch our film and check out details here.
*Impact-focused investing or simply impact investing is an investment strategy that seeks to achieve social or environmental goals as well as generate profit. Impact investors typically expect a return on their investment, unlike philanthropic endeavors, but this may be a secondary consideration.
